All sunshades – awnings, parasols and sun sails

The right sunshade can make a patio, garden or terrace more comfortable for dining, relaxing or spending time with family and friends. Depending on the space, you may need adjustable shade next to the house, a movable solution around your garden furniture or coverage over a larger open area.

Dancover offers a wide range of sunshades, including awnings, parasols and sun sails for private gardens as well as cafés, restaurants and other professional outdoor spaces. Each solution has different advantages, so your choice should reflect the size of the area, the sun's position, and how you use the space.

Which sunshade is right for you?

The category includes three main types of sunshades:

  • An awning is mounted on a suitable wall and can be extended or retracted above a patio, dining area or lounge space.
  • A parasol is a flexible solution that can be positioned where shade is needed and moved or stored when required.
  • A sun sail is secured between suitable anchor points and can cover an outdoor area without taking up floor space.

Before choosing, consider not only the area size but also how the sun moves across it during the hours you normally spend outside.

Awnings for adjustable shade next to the house

A wall-mounted awning creates a pleasant transition between the house and garden. Extend it when the sun becomes too strong above your patio or dining area and retract it when you want more light or the awning is not in use.

The range includes manually operated awnings as well as motorised models with remote control. Measure both the required width and projection and make sure the installation wall is strong enough to support the awning. The right fixings depend on the wall's construction and material, so professional installation may be advisable if you are unsure.

Fabric properties, UV protection and resistance to light rain vary between models. Check the specifications for the individual awning and always retract it in strong wind or demanding weather conditions.

Parasols for movable and versatile shade

A parasol is practical when you want to adjust the shade's position or don't have a suitable wall for an awning. It can provide shade around a dining table, lounge area, sunbed or pool, and you can reposition it as your needs change.

Classic centre-pole parasols are often suitable for tables with a parasol hole. Cantilever parasols have the pole and base positioned to one side, leaving more open space beneath the canopy. This can be an advantage above larger tables and lounge furniture.

Parasols are available in different shapes, sizes, materials and colours, including models designed for professional use. Whichever type you choose, use a compatible base or the recommended ballast, and close the parasol when it is not in use.

Sun sails for open and flexible coverage

A sun sail creates a light, simple form of outdoor shade above a patio, play area, spa, or garden furniture. As it is mounted between walls, posts or other anchor points, the space below remains free from poles and bases.

The position of the anchor points determines which shape and size will fit. Allow enough space for fittings and tensioning and install the sail with sufficient slope to help prevent rainwater from collecting on the fabric.

Sun sails are available in various shapes, sizes and materials. UV protection and water resistance vary, so check the specifications before choosing. Secure and tension the sail correctly, and remove it during strong wind, severe weather and periods when it is not being used.

What should you consider when choosing a sunshade?

Measure the outdoor area carefully and note where you need shade during the day. A large canopy may not provide shade where you need it if the sun is low or coming from the side.

Also consider:

  • whether you prefer a fixed or movable solution
  • the available wall or anchor points
  • the required width, projection or canopy size
  • how frequently you want to adjust the shade
  • the need for mounting fittings, a base or additional ballast
  • how the product will be retracted or stored when not in use

A combination of sunshades can sometimes provide the best coverage. For example, an awning may shade the main patio, while a parasol creates a separate place to sit elsewhere in the garden.

Use sunshades safely

Awnings, parasols and sun sails are all affected by wind. Close parasols, retract awnings and remove sun sails before strong wind or severe weather. Inspect fabrics, frames, operating mechanisms, fittings and anchor points regularly, and follow the care and safety instructions for the individual product.

Sunshades reduce direct exposure to sunlight, but the stated level of UV protection differs between models. Check the product specifications and continue to use appropriate personal sun protection.

Frequently asked questions about sunshades

Which type of sunshade is easiest to move?

A parasol generally provides the most flexibility because it can be repositioned or stored. Awnings and sun sails remain connected to fixed mounting points.

Can sunshades also protect against rain?

Selected awnings, parasols and sun sails offer some protection during light rain, but materials and water resistance vary. Always check the product specifications, and do not use these products as all-weather shelters.

Should I choose a centre-pole or cantilever parasol?

A centre-pole model is often suitable for a table with a parasol hole. A cantilever parasol leaves the area beneath the canopy more open and may suit lounge furniture or larger tables better.

Can sunshades stay outside throughout the season?

This depends on the model and weather conditions. Even products intended for regular outdoor use should be closed, retracted or removed during strong wind and severe weather. Follow the instructions supplied with the individual product.
